To become a new official in the North Zone, you must:

* Be of the age 13 by Jan. 1, 2010
* Attend a clinic
* Pass the Canadian Hockey National Referee Exam

2-day clinic

* Officials who will be registering as a level 1, (13-16 yrs old before Jan 1, 2010) as well as any other official who was not registered last season will be required to attend a 2-day clinic. The length of these clinics will still be 12 hrs of classroom instruction along with a 1 -1 ½ hr on-ice session on Sunday morning. Students must attend the complete clinic and cannot attend a single day only and expect to be registered as if they attended a one-day clinic.
* Due to the change in format for the clinic, it is expected that officials come prepared to their clinic. This involves reviewing the rulebook/casebook prior to the day of the clinic as not obtaining the appropriate pass mark will result in the official having to drop a level.

At these clinics officials learn / master:

* rule-knowledge
* positioning
* communication
* procedures
* complete a Canadian Hockey National Referee Exam
* and many other important skills of a hockey official

Contact Rod Long to register or for more information at 953-2058. For further information about being a Hockey Alberta Referee download the "Officiating in Alberta" information sheet.
